The many butterfly’s hanging out on the clusters of flowers along the trail was one of my favorite things. The views are nice, but not worth the hike up. Amazing how the water just comes right out of the rock. Very well kept.

Relaxing, quiet (if you go early, I started at 5a.m.) Parking lot was full when we left. The trail is primarily used for hiking, camping, and backpacking. Between the waterfalls, the wildflowers, and the many maples, this is a beautiful destination to hike year round, or to backpack and explore. Tonto Fish Hatchery is four miles north of Highway 260 on Forest Road 289. Definitely one of my favorites so far.Pretty trail and was enjoyable and nice to be along the creek for most of the way. Great spots at the creek with water most of the way. If you park along road the trail is to the right of bridge. After hiking the Highline Trail for 2 miles a steep descent into the headwaters of Horton Creek. Drive 17 miles east to Fish Hatchery Rd and turn left, the trailhead parking lot is one mile in. There are campsites near the springs, and several hiking trails in the area that lead to the spring itself. Took the family on Horton Creek Trail again today.

Horton Springs is a spring on the Mogollon Rim that leads into Horton Creek. The trial is somewhat rocky, thank God for the app because it’s easy to get lost when you’re distracted by the beauty in the creek. Some trails or park services may be closed this weekend so check with local authorities before heading out. You'll see the trailhead sign at the top.This is a more scenic and bit more strenuous loop hike to the spring, taking in the Derrick Trail, part of the Highline Trail, and the Horton Creek Trail.After parking the cars near Upper Tonto Creek Campground follow the Derrick Trail and hike gently uphill for 1.4 miles through the rim country to the Highline Trail junction. The quiet forest path near the creek surrounded by beautiful pines is this hikes main attraction. The trail is fairly straight forward for the first three miles. One thing not many mentioned before which is fairly important to know - poison ivy (and possibly oak) everywhere! From the Horton Springs, it is a relatively easy trip out to the car. Trail is rocky, steep at times but not too difficult, went down to the creek and followed that back and that was more difficult terrain.
