Did a trail run/hike this morning here for the first time, and it was great. We are dedicated to protecting open space and our scenic Greenbelt trails for all to enjoy. We lead over 200 FREE GUIDED HIKES each year; and have donated a total of over 500,000 volunteer hours to Long Island’s parks and trails.To find the Greenbelt Office in Blydenburgh Park: from Route 25-25A in Smithtown, go south on Brooksite Dr.; at next light (New Mill Rd. We weren't prepared for this, so definitely make sure that you do, so you don't have to turn around like us!Well-marked trail except early on at Hecksher st. park.
Very peaceful. Long Island Greenbelt Trail This is the original granddaddy Greenbelt hiking trail, a challenging but rewarding trek that takes hikers on a 31.8-mile north-south course traversing the island … The views are really nice by the water but were honestly ruined by the swarms of mosquitoes and the numerous ticks we found crawling on our legs. Lots of diverse sections with one of my favorite sections being a woodchip path through some tall pines. We counted more than 30 mosquito bites on one of my husband's legs. I used some spray, wore long pants w/ high socks, stayed near center of trail, and gave a thorough tick check afterwards with no ticks found fortunately. We totally missed it and walked the road into some round about way, but it was really beautiful. In its 34 miles, it passes through some 12,000 acres of open land, including four state parks and numerous county and town holdings. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, nature trips, and bird watching and is accessible year-round.

Follow the paved path at the west end of the lot to the Blydenburgh-Weld House. I know ticks come with the territory of hiking, but I couldn’t believe how many I kept finding on myself despite using repellent and staying on the trail.Long Island Greenbelt Trail South is a 14.5 kilometer moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Islip Terrace, New York that features a river and is good for all skill levels. Our MAPS of our trails and woodlands, contributed by naturalist Larry Paul, are acknowledged as the very best and most detailed of any on Long Island. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash. Make left and follow to the end. The LONG ISLAND GREENBELT TRAIL CONFERENCE is a unique, non-profit grassroots organization that has created more than 200 miles of hiking paths on Long Island, including two National Recreation Trails.

Even after dousing myself in tick repellent (several times) and staying on the marked trail, every so often I would check myself and have to flick a bunch of ticks off my shoes/lower legs. I can see it getting pretty buggy (fly-wise) in the first section near the water and along the swampy area.
