In 1916, Britain and France signed an agreement for the distribution of influence in the Middle East (the Sykes-Picot agreement, named after the two diplomats who signed it). It was Weizmann who convinced the United States government to recognize the newly formed state of Israel. Weizmann replied: ‘So far, I have succeeded in making a few hundred cubic centimetres of acetone at a time by the fermentation process.’ Undaunted, he resigned his post in Manchester and moved to London to develop the process.

This research enabled the growth of the chemical companies that would form the core of German industry and spurred his belief that such research could be undertaken for both profit and the national good. The Ministry of Munitions therefore began to look for non-edible sources of starch for the process, most notably using horse chestnuts. He often articulated the need for countries—especially those with scarce natural oil—to replace a petroleum-based chemical industry with one based on fermentation. But there is a good chance you will search in vain for the name Chaim Weizmann.Shortly after, Weizmann met Winston Churchill, the former First Sea Lord who was soon to be appointed Minister of Munitions. At the same time, the focus of acetone production using the process switched to Canada and the US.If you look through books on world war one, you will find the names of numerous politicians and generals; some famous, some less well known.


When asked by UK Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour what he wished to receive in return for his contribution to the war effort, Dr. Weizmann boldly replied, “There is only one thing I want: a national home for my people.” Duly impressed, Lord Balfour issued the famous Balfour Declaration of 1917 committing the British government to the establishment of a national home for the Jewish people in what was then Ottoman ruled Palestine.

That enabled industries, like pharmaceuticals, that had previously been reliant on coal tar—a resource virtually non-existent in Israel—to be independent of coal as a raw material.
