This month, our Today readings take us through Bible passages about Jesus’ followers in the days immediately following Easter. April 21, 2019; Mike Boucher; Lent; Easter Sunday. It’s been said “we are an Easter people living in a Good Friday world.”
This coming Sunday might not include a brass ensemble, lilies, and a full worship team but it should not be any less of an Easter celebration. Over time, the offering of service to others gives new meaning to your life because you know that you are doing something worthwhile. I want to start today’s reflection with a heartfelt, “Thank you!” to all of you who have been on this journey with me. God so loves the world that He sent Jesus and Jesus so loves the world that He sends us! By service to others, I do not mean doing a good deed or service in order to have someone do a good deed in return. Whether or not we consider ourselves a “liturgical” church or a church that highlights the Christian year there is wisdom in extending Easter beyond one day to give us time to further contemplate what the resurrection means to us today.As worship leaders and planners what are some ways you have extended Easter beyond the Sunday to help your congregants further reflect on the meaning of the resurrection?Our task as worship leaders and planners is to be used by the Holy Spirit to help our congregants live as Easter people in a world of wars, disease, flooding, abuse, sickness, depression, and yes, hope. Following his death and resurrection he commissioned his disciples, and the community he founded, to continue his mission of serving others. And we’ll see what it means to live as people of the resurrection.

We need to be reminded of  the significance of the resurrection not just as a past event that has spiritual implications but as an event whose aftershocks continue to be felt today influencing how we as Christians see the world, live in it, and “do”.Though the celebration of Easter may be over the Easter season is not.

And, like Jesus, you are called to be leaders, servant leaders, who offer your services out of love. Easter is a feast of new life. This poignant expression, ‘We are Easter people living in a Good Friday world!’ was first coined by Barbara Johnson in her devotional book, Splashes of Joy in the Cesspools of Life, and she should know. To be of service is to be ready to help or be useful wherever and whenever your services are needed. Our task as worship leaders and planners is to be used by the Holy Spirit to help our congregants live as Easter people in a world of wars, disease, flooding, abuse, sickness, depression, and yes, hope. Rector’s Word — Living as Easter People There is no other way around it; we are an Easter people. Paul tells us that it is no longer we who live, but Christ lives in us. Rather, it is a willingness to go the extra mile when your time, talent and resources are needed. What I do mean by service is the unselfish use of your personal gifts and resources for others.  We all want to live meaningful lives. Mary Magdalene weeping outside the tomb is a poignant image of Easter. Some of you have chosen to offer your resources, time and talents for the good of others, to serve others.
